A regional term for the dry, dust-carrying wind which occurs on the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains in Argentina. It is produced by the northeast movement of polar fronts. In the low-lands it remains hot and dry, although at high altitudes it is cold and can reach speeds over 200 km/hr. At a distance, the arid vegetation of the Andes Mountains is cast in a purple hue, an appropriate color for a temperamental and violent wind.
